In short
  • A gift for a newly qualified SOSU healthcare assistant has to suit an everyday life of uniforms and shifts — not a desk
  • Rings, bracelets and wristwatches are not worn with work clothes. That rules out a whole category of classic gifts
  • The authorisation does not come by itself — it has to be actively applied for and costs DKK 1,362
  • We recommend a budget between DKK 200 and DKK 1,500 — what is still on display in ten years has a name and a year on it

If you need to find a gift for a newly qualified SOSU healthcare assistant and you are not in the profession yourself, you rarely know what can be used. This guide covers what a social and healthcare assistant (social- og sundhedsassistent) has been through, what may be worn and used on a shift, and what is realistic to give.

Gift for a newly qualified healthcare assistant — a small wrapped gift, a coffee cup and a blank card on a staff room table

What a healthcare assistant has actually been through

The programme is underestimated outside the profession, and that rubs off on the gifts.

Basic course, main course and the total time

Social and healthcare assistant is a vocational programme. It begins with a basic course in two parts — GF1 of 20 weeks and GF2 of 20 weeks — followed by the main course, which alternates school periods and placements. For young people the main course lasts 2 years, 9 months and 3 weeks; via the adult route (EUV) 2 years, 8 months and 2 weeks, and with EUX (vocational plus upper-secondary qualification) 3 years, 6 months and 3 weeks. All told that is between three and four and a half years, with placements in care homes, home care, hospitals or psychiatry.

No workshop test — 30 minutes and a project assignment

The programme does not end with the practical test known from the skilled trades, but with a 30-minute oral exam based on a project assignment. The school then issues an education certificate. Along the way, Pharmacology and medication handling must be passed, and so must Danish and Science.

That matters for the gift: there is no physical object she is handed as proof of several years of work. The paper goes into a folder — and that is why a gift that can be displayed becomes the only visible trace of the programme in the home.

The authorisation does not come by itself

This is something almost nobody outside the profession knows: the authorisation does not automatically come with the education certificate. It has to be actively applied for from the Danish Patient Safety Authority, and the fee is DKK 1,362. The bill lands with the newly qualified person themselves.

After that the title is protected: you may only call yourself a social and healthcare assistant if you hold an authorisation. Note the nuance — it is the title that is protected, not an area of work reserved for the profession, as is the case for doctors.

The everyday life the gift has to fit into

This decides whether the gift is used or put away.

Rings, bracelets and watches may not be worn at work

In healthcare, short-sleeved work clothes are a requirement under the national infection control guidelines, and rings, bracelets and wristwatches are not worn with work clothes. These are not house rules from an individual department — they are in the hygiene handbooks.

The consequence is plain: a watch, a bracelet or a ring is not a practical gift for the job. It can be given to the person and worn in their free time, but if it is handed over with the words "so you have something for work", it misses the mark. It is worth saying outright, because watches and jewellery are what people outside the profession reach for first.

Shifts around the clock

Many posts involve shifts — evenings, nights, weekends. Things that need to be remembered, maintained or charged get lost in a shift rota. And an experience with a fixed date is a gamble if the rota only comes out four weeks ahead.

What can actually sit in a staff room?

Not much. There is rarely a personal desk, and shared rooms get cleared. For most people the gift therefore has to sit at home — and that is also where it is seen by the people she wants to tell about her profession.

Who gives what — and how much?

The right gift for a healthcare assistant depends more on who you are to the recipient than on what is popular.

Who is giving What makes sense Typical amount
Parents The gift that is meant to be displayed — personal, with name and year DKK 600–1,500
Grandparents Something symbolic with a handwritten note alongside DKK 300–800
Partner Something that recognises the shifts and exams you have seen at close quarters DKK 400–1,200
The class or study group One joint gift everyone signs — not ten small ones DKK 50–150 per person
The new workplace A welcome gift that shows the profession is taken seriously from day one DKK 400–1,000

The parents' and partner's gift

Parents have followed the placements, the cancelled family lunches and the week when pharmacology had to be passed. Their gift is the one that has to survive house moves — go for something personal rather than something useful, because she will buy the useful things herself when the first pay cheque lands. A partner can aim even more precisely: a gift that points to the nights and shifts lands harder than the title alone.

The class's joint gift

A class that has gone through the basic course and placements together has the classic problem: everyone wants to give something, and the budget per person is low. The solution is one gift everyone is part of. At DKK 50–150 per person, a class of ten reaches DKK 600–1,500 in total — exactly the range where a personal gift becomes possible.

The workplace's welcome gift

A department or care home that gives a gift on the first day of work does something that is remembered, because it rarely happens. If you want to give to several people at once, you can order together as a company.

What does the gift cost?

There is no fixed rate, but there are four levels.

Price level What it covers Suits
Under DKK 200 Flowers, a book, a well-thought-out card, a bottle Colleagues, neighbours, distant acquaintances
DKK 200–600 A good thermos mug, a piece of jewellery for leisure time, a smaller personal item Friends, grandparents, small groups
DKK 600–1,500 A personal gift with engraving, a figurine shaped to the profession Parents, partner, the class's joint gift
Over DKK 1,500 Larger jewellery, a weekend away, the authorisation fee paid and a little extra Parents marking the whole programme

The two middle levels are the ones we recommend. One idea at the upper end: put the DKK 1,362 for the authorisation in an envelope alongside the gift. It is an expense she cannot avoid, and it arrives at an awkward time.

Gift ideas that last — and those that do not

The difference between the categories below is not price. It is durability.

A personal gift with name and year

A figurine, a sign or a framed print with name, profession and year. It is the only category that can be given just once and to just one person — it cannot be re-gifted as a Christmas present the following year.

A figurine shaped to the profession

We should be honest: we do not have a ready-made SOSU figurine on the shelf. We design it for the profession when you order. The figurine for your trade costs DKK 1,098 with engraving included, is about 26 cm tall, comes in male and female versions and has a delivery time of 1–2 weeks, precisely because it is shaped to the order. You write the profession in the field, and we shape the figurine with the details that belong to the profession.

DKK 1,098 equals DKK 100 from eleven people, so a class or department can share it without anyone noticing. If you order together, you can write the names in the comments field. The figurine always has engraving, and it is therefore exempt from the right of withdrawal — read the text through one more time before you send the order. If you are unsure what the figurine will look like, write to us before you order.

Something for the shift

A good thermos mug, a solid bag, a pair of work shoes. Useful, but worn out in two years and therefore best as a supplement. Avoid anything worn on the hands and forearms.

Experiences, money and gift cards

Dinner or a stay works well from a partner and close friends — just choose something without a fixed date. Money is useful after years on apprentice pay or SU (the Danish state education grant), but leaves nothing to look at. If you give cash, put a well-thought-out card alongside — we have collected 55 messages for the card.

The FOA pin — and why you should not buy it

There is an emblem in the profession, and it is worth knowing about — even though it is not a gift you can give.

FOA (the trade union for care and service workers) has an education pin for the newly qualified. The motif is four facial profiles interlocking — the helper's version shows two — and it was designed in 1992 by the graphic designer Niels Elgaard. The pin is free for newly qualified members on presenting the education certificate.

It comes from FOA, not from a shop, so you do not need to obtain it. But you can mention it: ask whether she has collected her pin, or put a few words about the four profiles in the card.

A personal gift with engraving

Engraving is the cheapest step from a nice gift to a personal gift. At Udlært it costs DKK 199 as an add-on on the stocked figurines and is included in the price of the figurine we shape to the profession. There is room for 40 characters — enough for name, profession and year.

Three inscriptions that work: the name plus profession and year, for example "METTE · HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT 2026". The name plus the date on the education certificate. Or the name plus the sender, if the gift comes from the class. Keep the text short — 40 characters go quickly. If you need wording, there are 25 examples of engraving texts.

One thing before you order: an engraved gift cannot be exchanged. You have the statutory 14-day right of withdrawal, and at Udlært you have 90 days on figurines without engraving. Figurines with engraving take on a clearly personal character and are exempt from the right of withdrawal (Danish Consumer Contracts Act, section 18(2)(3)). There is a 2-year statutory complaints period under the Danish Sale of Goods Act.

When do you give the gift?

There are three natural moments, and each signals something different.

When the education certificate is in hand

The day the last test is passed and the certificate issued is the day the relief is greatest — and often the day when nothing marks it. That is exactly why a gift means so much here: it creates an occasion where there otherwise is none.

At the family party

If there is a party, give the gift before or after the meal, not in the middle. If several gifts arrive at once, it is the personal one that is still standing afterwards.

On the first day of work

If the gift comes from the new workplace, the first day of work is the right time. It is the most overlooked opportunity — and the one that makes the strongest impression, because nobody expects it.

How early should you order?

Stocked figurines ship within 1–3 working days, and 2–5 working days with engraving. If the figurine is to be shaped to a trade we do not have on the shelf, allow 1–2 weeks. Free shipping over DKK 599, and the gift box is included — the gift can wait in its box.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend?

It depends on the relationship, not the profession. Parents typically spend DKK 600–1,500, grandparents and friends DKK 200–800, and a class DKK 50–150 per person. In our experience, the name and the year matter more than the last hundred kroner.

Is a watch or a bracelet a good idea?

Not as a gift for the job. Rings, bracelets and wristwatches are not worn with work clothes, and the work clothes are short-sleeved. If you want to give jewellery, give it as something for leisure time and say so.

What is the difference between an assistant and a helper?

Two different programmes, each with its own certificate and its own title. The assistant programme is the longer one, and the assistant has passed Pharmacology and medication handling and must have an authorisation to use the title. Do not mix the two up in the card.

How many qualify each year?

Statistics Denmark counts helpers and assistants together, so there is no clean figure for assistants alone. Taken together, about 5,600–6,200 complete the social and healthcare programmes each year.

Can an engraved gift be exchanged?

No. Figurines with engraving are exempt from the right of withdrawal, because they take on a clearly personal character. Figurines without engraving can be returned within 90 days at Udlært — the first 14 are the statutory right of withdrawal. If there is a fault with the figurine, the 2-year statutory complaints period under the Danish Sale of Goods Act applies regardless of engraving.

What if the recipient has a different programme?

See the guide to gifts for new graduates or the one for the newly qualified nurse. For the skilled trades we have 42 ready-made figurines in our own collection: DKK 599 in 16 cm and DKK 899 in 24 cm.
