In short
  • A graduation gift marks the end of three to six years of study — it should be something that can be displayed, not used up
  • What you give depends more on your relationship with the graduate than on what the gift costs
  • We recommend a budget between DKK 200 and DKK 1,500 — parents at the upper end, a class or group sharing in the middle
  • Personal beats expensive: a gift with name, date and trade stays around long after the flowers have been thrown out

A graduation gift is given to someone who has reached the end of a programme of study — typically after three to six years of placements, exams and a final project. This guide covers what to give, what it costs and who gives what, so you can find a gift for a new graduate that suits your relationship with them.

What is a graduation gift?

Dimission (graduation) is the ceremony where a school or educational institution says goodbye to its finished students. The word covers both higher education institutions and upper-secondary schools, and the person who graduates is called a dimittend (graduate). It is a neutral term that applies at every level — a healthcare assistant, a nurse and a doctor are all graduates on the day they finish.

The title kandidat (master's graduate), on the other hand, is reserved for someone who has completed a master's programme at a university and may therefore put cand. in front of their Latin professional title. It is worth keeping track of if the gift is to be accompanied by a card. A newly qualified nurse or primary school teacher holds a professional bachelor's degree, not a master's, and calling her the wrong thing introduces a small wrinkle into a day that is otherwise about the identity of the profession.

Why give a graduation gift at all?

A programme of study rarely ends with a bang. There is a final exam, a project is handed in, and then it is over. The certificate itself ends up in a folder. The graduation gift is what makes the day tangible — something on display that reminds you there were four years behind the title that now appears on the employment contract.

That is also why consumable gifts fall flat here. Wine is drunk, chocolate is eaten, gift cards are used and forgotten. A gift that is still on the shelf in ten years does something different: it carries the story on every time someone asks what it is.

Graduation happens twice a year

The nursing programme has two intakes a year, in February and in September. The consequence is that people qualify twice a year, not once — and that you are just as likely to finish in January as in the middle of summer. If you are waiting for "graduation season", you risk being half a year too late.

Who gives what — and how much?

This is the question most gift guides skip, and in practice it is the only one that matters. The right gift for a graduate does not depend on what is popular this year, but on who you are in relation to the recipient. Parents, a partner and the study group solve three entirely different problems.

Who is giving What makes sense Typical amount
Parents The gift that is meant to be displayed — personal, with name and date DKK 600–1,500
Grandparents Something symbolic, ideally with a handwritten note alongside DKK 300–800
Partner Something that recognises what they have seen at close quarters for several years DKK 400–1,200
The study group or class One joint gift everyone signs — not five small ones DKK 50–150 per person
Friends outside the programme Something that celebrates the person rather than the profession DKK 200–500
The new workplace A welcome gift that signals the profession is taken seriously DKK 400–1,000

The parents' gift

Parents have followed the programme from the first day of study, and their gift is usually the one that has to survive house moves and years. This is where it makes sense to spend a little more and choose something personal rather than practical. A gift with a name and date on it is in practice the only gift that cannot be given by anyone else — and that is the whole point.

The study group's joint gift

A class of ten to fifteen people who have studied together for three or four years has a real problem: everyone wants to give something, nobody wants to give the same thing, and the budget per person is low. The solution is rarely ten small gifts. It is one gift everyone is part of, where the names can go on a card — or where the engraving on the gift itself mentions the class and the year. At DKK 50–150 per person you reach DKK 600–1,500 in total, and that is exactly the range where a personal gift becomes possible.

The workplace's welcome gift

Many newly qualified people start work a few weeks after graduating. A department or team that gives a gift on the first day of work does something that is remembered for a long time — not least because it rarely happens. There is one practical consideration that decides whether the gift is used or put away: can it sit in a staff room, a teachers' room or an office without being in the way? That rules out quite a lot, and it makes a figurine or a framed item an obvious choice.

What does a graduation gift cost?

There is no fixed rate, but there are four levels that most graduation gifts fall into. Below is what you realistically get for the money, and when each level makes sense.

Price level What it covers Suits
Under DKK 200 A book, flowers, a good card, a bottle Colleagues, neighbours, distant acquaintances
DKK 200–600 A piece of jewellery, an experience, a personal item without engraving Friends, grandparents, smaller groups
DKK 600–1,500 A personal gift with engraving, a trade-specific figurine, a bigger experience Parents, partner, the class's joint gift
Over DKK 1,500 A watch, larger jewellery, a trip, equipment for the job Parents marking an entire programme

In our view, a master's graduation gift belongs in one of the two middle levels. Go under DKK 200 and the gift easily becomes a courtesy. Go over DKK 1,500 and you risk shifting the focus from the occasion to the amount — and that is rarely the effect you are after on a day that is about professional pride.

Gift ideas that last — and those that do not

The categories below are the ones we are asked about most often. The difference between them is not price, but durability.

Personal gifts with name and date

A figurine, a sign, a piece of jewellery or a framed print with the graduate's name, the profession and the date. It is the only category that can be given just once, and the one that most often stays on display. Price range DKK 400–1,200.

Trade-specific gifts

Something that refers directly to the programme rather than to gifts in general. It requires the giver to have taken an interest in the profession, and that is exactly why it works: the recipient can see that someone has made an effort. It is also the category that most often ends up in the office or staff room rather than in a drawer.

Experiences

Dinner, a stay, a concert, a course. Works well from a partner and close friends, less well from grandparents, because the experience is rarely shared with the giver. Note also that the experience disappears — there is nothing left afterwards apart from the photos.

Practical gifts for the job

A bag, a diary, computer accessories, clothes for the new workplace. Useful, but worn out in two years. Works best as a supplement to a personal gift, not as the main gift.

Money and gift cards

Many new graduates have spent years living on SU (the Danish state education grant), and money is honestly useful. But it leaves nothing behind. If you give money, put a well-thought-out card alongside it — it is the only part of the gift that still exists in a year. We have collected 55 messages for the card if you are short of words.

A personal gift with engraving

Engraving is the cheapest step from a nice gift to a personal gift. At Udlært, personal engraving costs DKK 199 as an add-on, and there is room for 40 characters — enough for name, profession and date, or name and a short message.

Three wordings that work for a graduation: the name plus profession and year, for example "SOFIE · NURSE 2026". The name plus the graduation date, if the day is what matters most. Or the name plus the sender, if the gift comes from a class or a department. Keep the text short — 40 characters go quickly, and a short inscription is easier to read than a long one.

One thing worth knowing before you order: an engraved gift cannot be exchanged. You have the statutory 14-day right of withdrawal, and at Udlært you have 90 days on figurines without engraving. Figurines with engraving take on a clearly personal character and are exempt from the right of withdrawal (Danish Consumer Contracts Act, section 18(2)(3)). There is a 2-year statutory complaints period under the Danish Sale of Goods Act. Read the name through one more time before you send the order.

Graduation gifts for each programme

The programmes look alike from the outside and not at all from the inside. A primary school teacher has spent four years and 240 ECTS credits on a professional bachelor's degree. A nurse has spent three and a half years, of which 90 ECTS credits are clinical training. A doctor has spent six years and must then complete twelve months of clinical basic training before she may work independently. These are three different paths, and the gift is better for reflecting that.

We have written a guide to four of them:

How we do it when the figurine does not already exist

We have no ready-made figurines for the healthcare and teaching professions — neither nurse, healthcare assistant, doctor nor teacher. We design those for the trade when you order. The figurine for your trade costs DKK 1,098 with engraving included, comes in male and female versions, is about 26 cm tall and has a delivery time of 1–2 weeks, because it is made to order. Write the profession in the field and we will shape the figurine with the details that belong to it.

DKK 1,098 equals DKK 100 from eleven people, so a class or department can share it without anyone noticing. If you order together, you can write the names in the comments field. The figurine always has engraving, and it is therefore exempt from the right of withdrawal — read the text through one more time before you send the order. If you are unsure what the figurine will look like, write to us before you order.

For the skilled trades, on the other hand, we have 42 ready-made figurines in stock. You will find them under all journeyman gifts: DKK 599 in 16 cm and DKK 899 in 24 cm, delivery time 1–3 working days without engraving and 2–5 with.

When do you give the gift?

There are three natural moments, and each signals something different.

At graduation

The most obvious. The gift is given in connection with the ceremony or the party that follows. The advantage is that the occasion is clear to everyone. The drawback is that the graduate often has their hands full — so give it before or after the event itself, not in the middle.

After the last exam

Some institutions do not hold a joint ceremony, and for others graduation falls weeks after the last test. If you have followed the programme closely, the day the last exam is passed is often the day that feels right. It is also when the relief is greatest.

On the first day of work

If the gift comes from the new workplace, the first day or the first week is the right time. It is the most overlooked opportunity and the one that makes the strongest impression, precisely because nobody expects it.

What about ordering time?

If the gift is to be engraved, allow a couple of extra days. Figurines without engraving ship within 1–3 working days, with engraving 2–5 working days. Free shipping over DKK 599, and the gift box is included, so the gift is ready to present straight from the parcel. If there is a long way to the date, you can safely order in advance — the figurine can wait in its box.

Frequently asked questions about graduation gifts

How much should a graduation gift cost?

It depends on the relationship. Parents typically spend DKK 600–1,500, friends and grandparents DKK 200–800, and a class clubbing together DKK 50–150 per person. The amount matters less than whether the gift is personal.

Can you give money as a graduation gift?

Yes, and many new graduates appreciate it after years on SU (the Danish state education grant). But money leaves nothing to look at afterwards. If you combine it with a well-thought-out card or a small personal gift, you get both.

Is it called a dimittend or a kandidat?

Dimittend (graduate) covers everyone who has finished a programme. Kandidat (master's graduate) is reserved for those who have completed a master's programme at a university and may put cand. in front of their professional title. A newly qualified nurse, teacher or healthcare assistant is a dimittend, not a kandidat.

What do you give a new graduate who already has everything?

Something that cannot be bought for anyone else. A gift with name, profession and date can only be given to that one person, and it can only be given once — which is why it hits the mark even when drawers and cupboards are full.

Can an engraved gift be exchanged?

No. Figurines with engraving are exempt from the right of withdrawal, because they take on a clearly personal character. Figurines without engraving can be returned within 90 days at Udlært — the first 14 are the statutory right of withdrawal. If there is a fault with the figurine, the 2-year statutory complaints period under the Danish Sale of Goods Act applies regardless of engraving.

How long before should I order?

A week gives a good margin on a stocked figurine with engraving. If the figurine has to be designed for a trade we do not have on the shelf, allow 1–2 weeks. If you know the graduation date in advance, order early — the gift can happily wait in its box.
