Can a company give a tax-free gift to an employee — and where are the limits? That question lands on the desk of every employer who wants to recognise their employees: at Christmas, at anniversaries, and not least on the day an apprentice passes the trade exam and must be celebrated as a newly qualified journeyman.
This article gives an overview of the three most important sets of rules under Danish tax law: the threshold for minor employee benefits, the practice for Christmas gifts — and the rules on occasion gifts for personal milestones, which are especially relevant when journeyman gifts are given. One thing first: the thresholds are adjusted regularly, and this article is general guidance, not tax advice. Always check the current rates with the Danish Tax Agency, or ask the company's accountant, before settling on a gift policy.
Tax-free gifts for employees: how the rules fit together
The starting point in Danish tax law is simple and a little unforgiving: everything an employee receives from their employer is, as a rule, taxable pay — including benefits in kind such as gifts. But from that main rule there are a number of practical exceptions that make it possible to give gifts without the employee being taxed:
- The threshold for minor employee benefits: Small perks up to a combined annual value are not taxed.
- Christmas gift practice: The traditional Christmas gift in kind has its own limit within the scheme.
- Occasion gifts: Gifts for personal milestones — round birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and, indeed, the journeyman's certificate — are by established practice not taxed when they stay at an appropriate level.
The three tracks often get mixed up, and that's where the misunderstandings arise. Let's take them one at a time.
The threshold for minor employee benefits
The minor benefits threshold covers the small tokens of appreciation through the year: a bottle of wine, flowers, chocolate, a cinema ticket. The scheme works so that benefits below a certain combined annual value are not taxed — but if the threshold is exceeded, the entire amount can become taxable, not just the excess.
Two things are worth knowing about the threshold:
- It applies per employee per year and as a rule covers all minor benefits from the employer taken together. It's the sum that counts — not the individual gift.
- Cash and gift cards that can be exchanged for cash are not covered. Cash gifts are always taxable pay. The gift must be a physical gift in kind.
The exact threshold is adjusted regularly — check the current rate on the Danish Tax Agency's website before planning the year's gifts.
Christmas gifts and annual gifts
The Christmas gift is the most widespread employee gift in Denmark, and it holds a special position in practice: within the minor benefits scheme, a special limit applies to the annual Christmas gift in kind. If the Christmas gift stays under this limit, it remains tax-free for the employee — even, in certain situations, where the year's combined small benefits tip over the general threshold.
The interplay between the Christmas gift limit and the overall threshold is the point where most mistakes happen and the rules are most technical. Our advice is therefore twofold: keep up to date on the current amounts with the Danish Tax Agency, and keep a simple internal record of what each employee has received through the year. It takes five minutes and spares both the bookkeeping and the employees any grief.
Note again: the Christmas gift must be a gift in kind — a physical thing. Cash and freely exchangeable gift cards are taxed as pay, whatever the amount.
Occasion gifts for milestones
And now to the rule most relevant for training companies: occasion gifts. By established practice, gifts from the employer on the occasion of a personal milestone are not taxed when the gift is of "appropriate scope" — that is, at the level of what is generally given on such occasions.
Personal milestones typically include:
- Round birthdays
- Weddings and silver weddings
- Anniversaries and retirement
- Passed exams and the journeyman's certificate — the day the apprentice qualifies
The journeyman's certificate is a classic personal milestone: an event tied to the employee as a person that occurs only once. A gift from the company on that occasion therefore typically falls within the practice for tax-free occasion gifts — provided the value is appropriate and in reasonable proportion to the occasion. There is no single fixed threshold for occasion gifts; "appropriate scope" is a case-by-case assessment. A well-considered physical gift in the price range a qualification is normally celebrated in is unproblematic in practice — a trip or an expensive watch is not. If in doubt about a specific gift, ask the accountant or the Tax Agency.
The journeyman gift: the obvious occasion gift
Put the rules together, and the conclusion almost writes itself: the journeyman gift is the perfect occasion gift for a company. It meets all the criteria:
A genuine milestone: Qualification is a well-defined, personal one-off event — the core of occasion gift practice. A gift in kind: A physical gift, not cash. Appropriate value: A trade figurine in the price range journeyman gifts normally sit in matches the occasion precisely. And most importantly — it works: A personal gift from the master on the day the certificate is presented is remembered for the rest of the career and strengthens both retention and the company's reputation as a training workplace.
Our trade figurines are designed in Denmark for exactly this occasion: figurines in the newly qualified's own trade — from carpenter and industrial technician to chef — in male and female versions and two sizes: standard 16 cm at 599 kr and premium 24 cm at 899 kr, delivered in a gift box. With engraving of a name and year (+199 kr), the gift becomes personal in a way no gift card can match. See the full range in categories like construction and civil works or metal and engineering.
How other companies approach the gift — who presents it, when and with what words — is gathered in our article on the journeyman gift from the company.
Three common misunderstandings
When we talk to companies about employee gifts, the same misunderstandings recur. Here are the three most common — and what actually applies:
"As long as the gift is small, it's tax-free." Almost — but it's the sum over the year that counts under the threshold, not the individual gift. Five small gifts can together tip the limit, and then the whole amount can become taxable. That's why the internal gift record matters.
"A gift card is the same as a gift in kind." No. Gift cards that effectively function as money are treated as cash pay and are taxable. Practice distinguishes between broadly usable gift cards and cards restricted to specific selected goods — but the grey zone is wide, and the safe route is always a physical gift.
"Occasion gifts have the same threshold as Christmas gifts." Also no. Occasion gifts for personal milestones are assessed on their own, based on what is "appropriate scope" for the occasion — there is no single fixed rate. That gives flexibility, but also a responsibility to keep the gift at a reasonable level.
How to introduce a simple gift policy
If you want to make things easy for yourselves, write a short gift policy — half a page is enough. It should establish three things: which occasions the company gives gifts for (Christmas, round birthdays, anniversaries, qualification), an indicative price level per occasion, and who is responsible for ordering and record-keeping. For training companies, qualification is the obvious fixed point: every time an apprentice passes the trade exam, the same gift with personal engraving is triggered — fair, predictable and easy to administer. With a standing agreement on invoice payment, the whole process is reduced to a single order once the exam date is known.
Checklist for the company
Five points that keep the gift policy on safe ground:
- Give gifts in kind, not cash. Cash and freely exchangeable gift cards are always taxable pay.
- Check the current rates. The minor benefits threshold and the Christmas gift limit are adjusted regularly — the Tax Agency's website has the applicable amounts.
- Tie larger gifts to milestones. Occasion gifts for e.g. the journeyman's certificate are assessed separately — but keep the value appropriate to the occasion.
- Keep a simple gift record. Note gifts per employee per year, so the threshold can be monitored.
- Ask when in doubt. The accountant or the Tax Agency will gladly answer — it's cheaper than a back-tax bill.

See the solution for businesses →FAQ — frequently asked questions about tax-free employee gifts
Is a journeyman gift from the company tax-free for the employee?
A gift on the occasion of a passed trade exam is an occasion gift for a personal milestone, and by established practice such gifts are not taxed when the value is of appropriate scope. If in doubt about a specific gift, ask the accountant or the Tax Agency.
What is the threshold for minor employee benefits?
It's the combined annual value of minor benefits an employee can receive tax-free. The amount is adjusted regularly — check the current rate on the Danish Tax Agency's website.
Can we give employees a gift card tax-free?
Gift cards that can be exchanged for cash or used almost like cash are taxed as pay. To be on the safe side, give a specific physical gift instead.
Does the journeyman gift count under the minor benefits threshold?
Occasion gifts for personal milestones are by practice assessed separately and typically don't need to be squeezed under the threshold. Do keep the value appropriate to the occasion, though, and clarify specific borderline cases with the accountant.
Can the company deduct the journeyman gift?
Expenses for employee gifts at milestones are treated in the company's accounts under the ordinary rules for staff expenses. Ask the accountant about the specific bookkeeping — it depends on the gift's nature and occasion.
Do the rules also apply to apprentices?
Yes — apprentices are employed staff, and the same rules on employee benefits and occasion gifts apply. The journeyman's certificate is precisely a classic milestone where an occasion gift is natural.
