In brief
- A gift for the guild ceremony does not need to be expensive — but it should mean something
- The best gifts are trade-specific, personal and lasting
- Master, family and friends give gifts at different price levels
- The gift is given at the guild ceremony itself — not the week after
The guild ceremony (svendegilde) is one of the most important traditions in Danish craft culture. When an apprentice passes their journeyman's examination and receives their certificate, the occasion is marked with a formal gathering of family, the master craftsman and colleagues. A thoughtful gift is a central part of the celebration.
What is a guild ceremony?
A svendegilde is the celebration held when a craft apprentice passes their journeyman's examination. The tradition dates back to the guild era and remains alive in Denmark today. The ceremony gathers the master, colleagues and family to welcome the apprentice as a fully qualified craftsperson.
When do you give the gift?
The gift is given at the guild ceremony, immediately after the certificate is presented. If you cannot attend, give it as soon as possible afterwards — ideally within the same week as the examination.
Who gives what?
| Who | Typical gift | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Master craftsman | Trade figurine, tools, personal gift | 400–1,000 DKK |
| Parents / family | Personal, often with engraving | 300–800 DKK |
| Colleagues (group) | Group gift — figurine or experience | 500–1,500 DKK |
| Friends | Experience gift, personal item | 150–400 DKK |
What type of gift works?
- Trade figurines — a figurine depicting the craftsperson's trade, personalised with name and date
- Quality tools — professional-grade equipment the new journeyman will actually use
- Engraved items — with name, date and trade inscribed
- Experience gifts — something to look forward to after a long apprenticeship
What to avoid
- Joke gifts — the guild ceremony is a proud occasion
- Generic gifts with no connection to the trade or the person
- Gift cards to general retailers — they signal a lack of thought
- Cheap novelties — a small quality gift beats a large cheap one every time
From practice
We make journeyman's gifts for craftspeople across all trades. Trade-specific gifts always land best — a carpenter figurine for a carpenter, a VVS figurine for a plumber. A generic gift ends up in a drawer; a trade figurine goes on the shelf.

Can you give a gift if you cannot attend the guild ceremony?
Absolutely. Give it as soon as possible afterwards — ideally the same week. A thoughtful card makes the gift complete regardless of timing.
What happens at a guild ceremony?
A typical svendegilde includes a formal meal, speeches, the presentation of the journeyman's certificate and gift-giving. The tradition varies slightly by trade and region, but the core is the same: celebrating the apprentice becoming a fully qualified craftsperson.
